Planning the Perfect Vic High Country 4WD Trip with Our 7-Day Itinerary

Victorian High Country Lookout

As a Queensland-based team, getting to the Vic High Country requires us to travel through New South Wales first. As a result, this particular itinerary begins at the NSW/Victoria border and takes you west before ending in Licola, a remote town at the edge of the High Country roughly 3 hours east of Melbourne. You can, however, reverse the itinerary if you’re based around Melbourne and would prefer to start your trip from Licola instead.

We’ve scheduled 7 days for the entire journey, and each day involves approximately 3 to 4 hours of driving. However, your actual travel time may vary depending on things like the weather and road conditions. Still, this itinerary should give you plenty of time to enjoy the tracks, adjust your route where necessary, take in the views, and have heaps of fun with your mates.

On that note, we wouldn’t recommend trying to tackle this Victorian High Country 4WD itinerary without your mates in tow. There are several tricky tracks throughout the region, so travelling in a convoy with other experienced off-roaders is a must.

Remember to always pay attention to road closures and track conditions, never try to take on more than you or your vehicle can handle, and most importantly, don’t forget to have fun! This is a stunning piece of off-road country, and we hope you enjoy driving through it just as much as we have.

Day 1 – Tom Groggin Campground to Angler’s Rest

Main 4WD Tracks: Tom Groggin Track, Davies Plain Track, Limestone Creek Track

Trip Highlights: Davies Plain Hut, Limestone Creek Camping Area, Blue Duck Inn

The first day of your trip begins on the very edge of the Victorian border at Tom Groggin Campground. From here, you’ll cross over the Murray River into the High Country and instantly drive onto one of the best-known 4×4 tracks Victoria has to offer: The Tom Groggin Track. From here, you’ll follow the path through the forest and along the river until it merges into the Davies Plain Track.

This track will lead you deeper into the Victorian High Country towards Davies Plain Hut. The hut is a well-known rest area with sweeping countryside views, offering you your first taste of the many stunning landscapes to come.

After taking in the view here, you’ll then drive south, eventually turning onto Limestone Creek Track before arriving at your second destination: Limestone Creek Camping Area. Located in Alpine National Park, this area is surrounded by lush trees and has a large clearing right by the creek, making it an ideal spot for various recreational activities. Make use of the site’s facilities, enjoy lunch with a view, and stretch your legs before packing up and getting back on the road.

After continuing your journey west, you’ll eventually reach Angler’s Rest, your final stop for the day. This tranquil countryside town is nestled deep within Alpine National Park and has several idyllic spots where you can stay the night. We’d recommend booking a room at the Blue Duck Inn, a traditional country pub that promises a wholesome atmosphere, a hearty meal, and delicious cold beer to all who visit.

Day 2 – Angler’s Rest to Tambo River Campsite

Main 4WD Tracks: Haunted Stream Track

Trip Highlights: Victoria Falls Lookout, Kosciuszko Lookout

Day two of this Victorian High Country 4WD itinerary will take you south as you leave Angler’s Rest early and make your way towards your next destination. After about an hour of driving, you’ll reach Victoria Falls Lookout, your first stop today. This lookout is located next to Cobungra Creek and provides a great view of the falls cascading down the Alps.

The next attraction on the list is Kosciuszko Lookout, which is a short drive south of Victoria Falls. With gorgeous panoramic views, plenty of space to park up, and multiple picnic benches dotted around the area, this is the perfect place to enjoy a scenic lunch.

Once you’re ready to depart this spot, you’ll continue driving south, making your way past Brookville and towards Stirling where you’ll get the chance to take on one of the best 4WD tracks in the Victorian High Country: The Haunted Stream Track. Featuring over 50 river crossings within a mesmerising woodland setting, this track promises a truly unique and exciting adventure from start to finish.

Once you reach the end of the track, your last stop of the day awaits just 10 minutes away at Tambo River Campsite. Situated across a small bridge just off Great Alpine Road, this campsite offers serene countryside views in a highly convenient location, making it the perfect place to rest for the night.

Day 3 – Tambo River Campsite to Dargo Hotel

dargo hotel

Main 4WD Tracks: Tambo Spur Road, Friday Spur Track

Trip Highlights: Deptford Camping Area, Waller’s Hut, Dargo Hotel

On day three, you’ll continue driving west along some lesser-known Vic High Country tracks to reach one of the region’s most well-known landmarks: The historic Dargo Hotel. Your first stop along the way will be Deptford Camping Area, right by the Nicholson River. Its serene surroundings and scenic walking trails are ideal for exploring, and its crystal-clear waters are the perfect spot for a relaxing swim.

Once you’re feeling refreshed and recharged, your adventure will continue, taking you up towards Marthavale and onto Friday Spur Track where you’ll find Waller’s Hut. Take some time to stretch your legs, sign the hut’s visitor book, and relax with the rest of your convoy before getting back on the road for the home stretch towards Dargo Hotel.

Once you arrive at Dargo Hotel, the only thing left to do is grab a beer from the pub and kick back with your mates. This family-run pub has been welcoming weary travellers since it first opened in 1898. Today, it continues to offer the same rural charm with a few more added comforts. With ice-cold beer on tap, delicious food, and multiple accommodation options including a picturesque campsite and charming log cabins, this beloved Victorian landmark cannot be missed.

Day 4 – Dargo Hotel to Wongungarra River Campsite

Important Note: Today’s journey will take you very high up into the Alps. During winter, this area is subject to very low temperatures, much more challenging driving conditions, and many road closures. To avoid disappointment, we’d strongly recommend planning your journey along the following Vic High Country tracks in the summertime. However, if you do decide to head out during the colder months, you’ll need to be prepared to skip some tracks and alter your itinerary for days four and five…

Main 4WD Tracks: Billy Goat Bluff Track, Crooked River Track, Blue Rag Range Track

Trip Highlights: The Pinnacles, Talbotville Camping Area, Blue Rag Range Trig Point

Welcome to day four of your adventure! Today, you’ll get to drive along some of the most famous Victorian High Country 4WD tracks ever, so we hope you’re feeling well-rested! After fuelling up with a hearty breakfast, you’ll want to hit the road bright and early to begin the drive towards The Pinnacles, which will be your first stop today. Once you’ve arrived there and parked up, it’s a pleasant 10-minute walk to the lookout tower, which offers fantastic 360-degree views of the High Country from above.

After you’ve snapped enough pictures of the mountains beyond, it’s time to drive back down Pinnacles Road and turn straight onto Billy Goat Bluff Track, your first famous track of the day. This rugged road is easily one of the most iconic 4WD tracks in Victoria, and we believe it deserves all the hype it gets. Not only does this track promise an exciting drive with its steep inclines and rocky terrain, but it also boasts amazing countryside views. It’s a tough drive, so you’ll need to be prepared, but there’s no doubt it’s well worth the challenge!

After completing this trail and crossing the river, it’s not long before you’ll reach your second famous track of the day: The Crooked River Track. Much like Billy Goat Bluff, this track is another super entertaining drive, with incredible scenery, challenging terrains, and over 20 river crossings from start to finish. You’ll find a brief respite along the way at Talbotville Camping Area, after which you’ll continue up Crooked River Track to conquer your last famous trail of the day: The Blue Rag Range Track.

As you scale this track and ascend even higher into the mountains, you’ll be met with the most indescribable views so far. Make sure to pull over at Blue Rag Range Trig Point to take some pics and soak in your surroundings; this is one spot you’re going to want to remember!

Then, once you’ve taken it all in, you’ll keep on driving to the end of the track where your final stop of the day awaits you at Wongungarra River Campsite. Today was the biggest day of your itinerary so far, so go ahead and relax for the evening. Crack open a cold one, sit by the fire, and unwind with your mates… You’ve earned it!

Day 5 – Wongungarra River Camp Site to Wonnangatta Station

Vic High Country Campsite

Main 4WD Tracks: Tea Tree Spur Track, Humffray River Track, Wonnangatta Track

Trip Highlights: Mount Sarah, Wonnangatta Station

Rise and shine! It’s day five of your Vic High Country 4WD trip! Today, you’re heading out towards Wonnangatta Station, a popular 4WD spot that’s known for its fascinating history and epic tracks. You’ll begin the day by travelling back up the Blue Rag Range Track, driving north along Dargo High Plains Road (closed during winter), and then heading west towards Selwyn.

This trip is another beautiful drive, with plenty of opportunities to stop and take in the Victorian High Country’s gorgeous landscapes. You’ll find several lookouts and rest stops where you can appreciate the view, including Murray’s Hut Site and Goghill Creek Camp in Selwyn and the peak of Mount Sarah in Wongungarra.

Once you reach Wongungarra, you’re on the home stretch towards Wonnangatta Station. You’ll get to drive along a number of the Victorian High Country’s 4WD tracks during this final stretch, including the Tea Tree Spur Track, the Humffray River Track, and (of course) the Wonnangatta Track.

After you’ve arrived at Wonnangatta Station and picked your camping spot, you’ll quickly realise why this destination deserves a place on every off-roader’s bucket list. With its incredibly rich history and countless recreational activities to enjoy, we guarantee you won’t be short on things to do here! Explore the station’s countless scenic tracks, step into its elaborate past by visiting its many historic sites, and just enjoy relaxing with your mates in nature. How’s the serenity?

Day 6 – Wonnangatta Station to Davon’s Flat Camping Area

craigs hut

Main 4WD Tracks: Zeka Spur Track, King Billy Track

Trip Highlights: King Billy Tree, Lovick’s Hut, Bindaree Falls, Craig’s Hut

On day six, you’ll leave Wonnangatta Station to tackle another one of the best 4WD tracks the Victorian High Country has to offer: The Zeka Spur Track. Featuring a few steep inclines, many twists and turns, and endlessly awesome views, this is yet another track that promises a truly exciting drive.

Your first stop today awaits you along the Bluff Track at King Billy Tree, which is one of the largest snow gums in Australia. This tree really dominates the surrounding landscape with its huge canopy, twisted branches, and eerie presence, making it a great spot to capture some pretty unique photos.

After that, you’ll continue towards Craig’s Hut. If you have the time along the way, we’d also recommend stopping off for a short and scenic walk to Bindaree Falls. The walk lasts around 10 minutes all up, and the waterfall at the end is absolutely beautiful and well worth the quick detour.

Once you reach Craig’s Hut, you’ll find even more stunning scenery. Originally constructed as a film set for the iconic movie The Man from Snowy River, this is one of the most famous huts in the Victorian High Country. Not only is it an important part of Australia’s film history, but it also boasts unbelievable views of the ranges from its premium vantage point atop Mount Stirling.

From Craig’s Hut, you’ll continue your drive to Davon’s Flat Campsite, a tranquil spot by the Howqua River with great facilities and magnificent surroundings. You’ll also find many scenic rest stops along the way, including Mirimbah Park and Carter’s Road Picnic Area, where you can take a break and enjoy more of the High Country’s landscapes. The final day of your trip is fast approaching, so we’d suggest soaking in as much of the region’s beauty as possible while you have the chance.

Day 7 – Davon’s Flat Camping Area to Licola Wilderness Village

barkly river jeep track

Main 4WD Tracks: Mitchell’s Track, Barkly River Jeep Track, Jamieson-Licola Road

Trip Highlights: Mitchell’s Track Slate Mine, Mount Skene Viewpoint

Welcome to the seventh and final day of your Vic High Country 4WD trip. Today, you’ll start your morning by travelling south on the Howqua Hills Track towards Mitchell’s Track. As you continue on down Mitchell’s Track, you’ll reach your first stop of the day at the track’s old slate mine, which boasts great creekside views of the region’s surrounding valleys and peaks.

From here, you’ll keep driving along Mitchell’s Track until it joins up with Mt Sunday Road, where you’ll be faced with a couple of different route options. Your first option is to head straight for Jamieson-Licola Road by first travelling southwest towards Wren’s Flat Camping Area.

Alternatively, if you’re prepared for a real challenge, you can drive southeast and head for the Barkly River Jeep Track. Drivers beware, though, this track is filled with sharp corners and steep inclines. When we say this is a challenging trail, we mean it. Do your research to make sure you know what you’re heading into beforehand, and don’t try to attempt this route unless your vehicle has good ground clearance, front and rear diff locks, and high-quality underbody protection

Whichever route you take, you’ll want to head towards Mount Skene Viewpoint. This lookout offers great views of the lush valleys below, with the landscape seemingly going on forever if you’re lucky enough to visit on a super clear day. Take some time to really soak in the views while you can, because after this stop, you’re on the home stretch towards the itinerary’s final destination.

From Mount Skene Viewpoint, you’ll keep driving down Jamieson-Licola Road until you finally reach Licola Wilderness Village. This location is the perfect place to end (or begin!) a trip through the Victorian High Country. It has fantastic facilities, serves as a gateway to many 4WD tracks, and offers beautiful views every way you turn, serving as a true testament to the many perks of rural life.

As you relax by the river and take in the beauty of the High Country one last time, we hope you can say that this 4WD adventure has been the trip of a lifetime for you and your mates. May the Victorian High Country welcome you back soon!
