Distance: 16.4 km
Difficulty: Easy
The first K’gari 4WD track to secure a spot on our list, beating out some fierce competition for tenth place overall, is the track to Wathumba Creek campsite. This journey starts along the island’s northeast shores at Orchid Beach, which has a fuel station and convenience store should you want to top up or grab any snacks before you depart.
From Orchid Beach, you’ll travel inland and head south along Wathumba Road which eventually curves around to meet the campsite at Wathumba Creek on the island’s western shores. The trip takes 45 minutes all up and is typically considered suitable for beginners.
While the track is pretty narrow, it’s also generally firm and easy to navigate, especially on dry, sunny days. We’d recommend taking it slow to make the drive easier and remember to keep a look out for any boggy patches, especially during or immediately after wet weather. Once you reach Wathumba Campsite, you’ll be rewarded with an idyllic spot boasting stunning ocean views, pristine white sands, and calm creek waters.
Distance: 9 km
Difficulty: Intermediate
The next drive on our list is the road from the island’s east side to Lake Allom, one of K’gari’s many inland lakes. This 9 km track takes you west along Woralie Road, travelling from The Pinnacles on 75 Mile Beach to Lake Allom at the island’s centre.
Despite being one of K’gari’s lesser-known freshwater lakes, Lake Allom is also among the most unique. It’s easily one of the best places on the island to spot turtles, and its golden tannin-stained waters create a sensational landscape that’s perfect for a relaxing swim.
All up, the journey from The Pinnacles to Lake Allom should take about half an hour to complete. Previous 4WD experience is recommended for this track, as it can be pretty boggy in places, and you’ll need to know how to drive properly over its soft sand.
Distance: 19.6 km
Difficulty: Intermediate
If you’re keen to keep on adventuring from Lake Allom, we’d highly recommend continuing west along Woralie Road towards Awinya Creek. There are a couple of ways to reach Awinya Creek from this particular road, but the most straightforward route tends to be via the Woralie Creek Camping Area.
From Lake Allom, you’ll continue along Woralie Road for around 12 km and then turn right once you reach Woralie Creek Camping Area on the western beach. Then, it’s roughly another 7.5 km along the beach to get to Awinya Creek Campsite. Make sure to plan your trip around the tides, as you’ll need to drive along the beach at low tide to avoid getting stuck.
While the journey to Awinya Creek is mainly smooth, it’s best suited to people with prior beach driving experience as it can be quite tricky in places. However, the sheer beauty of Awinya Creek is well worth any challenge. Tucked away from the crowds, this hidden paradise promises a picture-perfect coastline, crystal-clear creek waters, and truly beautiful island wildlife.
Distance: 7.6 km
Difficulty: Easy
Beginning along the eastern shores of K’gari, this 4WD track will take you from the island’s pristine coastline to one of its most spectacular inland lookouts. The trip takes roughly 20 minutes from Cornwell’s Campground, leading you to the Lake Wabby Lookout carpark via Cornwell’s Break Road. This road is well-maintained the entire way, making it a great choice for drivers without much 4WD experience.
Once you reach the carpark, it’s a pleasant 15-minute walk to the lookout itself. Upon arrival, you’ll witness the incredible Hammerstone Sandblow and Lake Wabby beyond. The deepest lake on K’gari, Lake Wabby is ultimately fated to be consumed by the sands around it, so we’d suggest getting out to see it while it’s still there!
Distance: 19 km
Difficulty: Advanced
Starting at Poyungan Valley on the eastern beach, this 4×4 track lasts approximately 2 hours, taking you around Lake Garawongera before finishing back on the beach at Happy Valley. The track can be pretty rough in places, so it’s recommended for experienced off-roaders only, but the scenery makes it well worth the challenge.
You’ll be met with stunning views throughout the drive, including coastal woodlands, impressive dunes, and (of course) the main attraction: Lake Garawongera. Surrounded by towering forests, the tannin-stained waters of Lake Garawongera are the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing swim and soak in the beauty and serenity of nature.

Enjoy enchanting hidden lakes, surround yourself with spectacular kauri pines, and immerse yourself in ancient landscapes as you take your 4WD along K’gari’s Northern Forests trail. From the tranquil Lake Allom and the lush green Yidney Scrub to the picturesque Knifeblade Sandblow and the golden sand towers of The Pinnacles, this drive showcases some of K’gari’s rarest natural wonders.
The Northern Forests Scenic Drive stretches just over 42 km one way, lasting around 4 hours in total. Track conditions can be inconsistent in places, and your journey may be affected by overgrown vegetation or recent tree falls blocking your route. As such, this track is best suited to experienced off-roaders with good recovery gear and communication equipment.
Distance: 500 m
Difficulty: Bloody hard yakka (super advanced)
If you’re looking for a real challenge, we’d suggest taking your 4WD to K’gari’s northern shores for a hair-raising journey past the famous Ngkala Rocks. Known as one of the island’s most notorious drives, this thrilling track only measures around 500 metres, but it will undoubtedly put your 4WD skills to the test.
The adventure begins with a narrow chasm lined with rugged rocks, requiring drivers to carry out some pretty careful manoeuvres to avoid any scrapes. Then, the easy part is over (no seriously) as you move on to tackle soft sand and steep inclines that have caused even the most experienced off-roaders to get bogged down.
What’s more, this tricky track is all one-way, so you’ll have to consider every move you make if you want to avoid causing a bottleneck situation. No pressure! Sure, this drive isn’t exactly for the faint-hearted, but we’re off-roaders! The satisfaction of conquering such a challenging track is near irresistible, and the mesmerising beach views around you promise a truly unforgettable and deeply rewarding adventure.

As one of the most popular scenic drives on K’gari, this 4WD track promises plenty of opportunities to enjoy the island’s many natural wonders up close. Featuring some of K’gari’s most famous beaches and historic landscapes, this 4WD adventure is unquestionably the best way to experience the island’s coastal beauty. You’ll explore several iconic spots throughout your drive, including 75 Mile Beach, the Maheno Shipwreck, the Champagne Pools, Eli Creek, and much more.

Starring world-famous landmarks, beginner-friendly sand tracks, and plenty of captivating landscapes, it’s no wonder the Central Lakes Scenic Drive scored first place on our list. Lasting approximately 3 hours, this popular 4WD track will take you through the very heart of K’gari to explore the phenomenal lookouts and breathtaking lakes hidden within.
Your journey will begin at Central Station Rainforest and end on the Eastern Beach, winding through towering Satinay trees and vast banksia woodlands. This track showcases all kinds of natural wonders, including dramatic sandblows, impressive lakeside lookouts, and one of K’gari’s most famous attractions: Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie).
Surrounded by lush greenery that seems to go on forever, Boorangoora’s crystal clear waters and pure white silica sands offer mesmerising views that must be seen to be believed. We’d recommend setting off early, as this scenic drive is incredibly popular, with tourist numbers peaking at Boorangoora between 10 am and 3 pm daily.
