Central Station Camping Area

Hidden deep within the island’s central rainforest lies one of the most popular K’gari campsites: Central Station Camping Area. With its beautiful boardwalks, abundant wildlife, and well-maintained facilities, it’s easy to see why this spot is such a favourite among tourists.

The camp is sheltered by the rainforest’s many native trees, offering a cool retreat that’s ideal for both campers and local island wildlife. Whether you’re relaxing beneath the stars, exploring the lush landscape on scenic drives, or enjoying rainforest walks to spot the K’gari’s many curious critters, this campsite has it all. 

Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie) Walkers’ Camp

Available only to adventurers completing the K’gari Great Walk, Boorangoora Walkers’ Camp is a little more exclusive than the other campsites on our list. However, with its unique setting, stunning natural beauty, and proximity to K’gari’s most famous lake, we believe this secluded spot is more than worthy of a place on our top 10 list. 

Hikers can pitch their tents beneath the shade of the site’s eucalypt forests before enjoying the short walk to Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie), where they can unwind after a long day of walking. Stroll along the white sandy shores, swim in the lake’s brilliant blue waters, take in the picturesque views, and rest beneath the starlight before continuing your journey.

Wathumba Campsite

Right along the beach on K’gari’s west side, you’ll find Wathumba Campsite nestled in the space where the ocean meets the creek. As a more secluded spot, campers here are often greeted by K’gari’s local wildlife, including birds, turtles, rays, and more. If you visit during winter, you might even be lucky enough to spot humpback whales swimming along the coast!

Unlike the rough ocean waves that dominate the opposite side of the island, the waters at Wathumba Campsite are calm and sheltered, creating ideal conditions for kayaking, boating, and paddleboarding. These quiet waters also harbour an abundance of fish, making this camp a top spot for anglers who are looking to reel in their next big catch.

Cathedrals on Fraser has established itself as one of the best campsites on K’gari for young families, first-time visitors, and keen explorers. This privately owned campground is situated right by 75 Mile Beach and is a short drive away from many of the island’s best tourist spots, including the famous Maheno Shipwreck. 

The site’s convenient location, top-notch facilities, and highly convenient amenities make it easy to explore K’gari’s breathtaking natural beauty without sacrificing too many of your creature comforts. Whether you’re looking to bed down in the bush with a basic tent or live it up a little in a luxurious cabin, Cathedrals on Fraser has something for every comfort level.

Lake Boomanjin Camping Area

Home to the largest perched lake in the world, Lake Boomanjin Camping Area offers a truly unique camping experience to all who visit. With many native trees surrounding the lake’s edge, picking a shady spot to set up camp is easy. Once you’re all settled, you can spend a few days listening to the area’s enchanting birdlife, kayaking over the lake’s still waters, and taking in the indescribable views. 

This campsite is conveniently located along K’gari’s Southern Lakes Scenic Drive, making it an ideal rest stop for 4WDers exploring the island’s vast natural beauty. Visitors wishing to camp here will need to park outside the site and take a short walk to access the lake’s shores, where brightly coloured sands and calm golden waters await. 

Waddy Point Beachfront Camping Area

Waddy Point Beachfront Camping Area is a serene little spot near the Binngih Sandblow in K’gari’s northern region. Overlooking the still waters of Marloo Bay, this picturesque location is the only campsite on the island where visitors can enjoy a campfire right along the beach. 

Surrounded by impressive headlands, inviting rock pools, lush green foliage, and charming wildlife, this site offers no shortage of fun things to see and do. We suggest spending your time here kayaking or paddleboarding along the still waters, fishing in the bay, or soaking up the sun as you unwind on the beach. 

Dundubara Camping Area

Right next to K’gari’s iconic 75 Mile Beach, you’ll find Dundubara Camping Area, a deeply charming spot offering scenic walks, spectacular sunrises, and plenty of beach fishing opportunities.

The campsite is set back just 200 metres from the shore in shaded woodlands that offer ample protection from the harsh ocean winds. Visitors can spend their time here strolling along the sand, walking to the nearby Wun’gul Sandblow (2 km return walk), fishing in the ocean, and swapping stories around the campfire. 

Woralie Creek Camping Area

With the ocean on one side and a freshwater creek on the other, Woralie Creek Camping Area is the perfect blend of beachside paradise and idyllic oasis. This iconic K’gari camping spot is situated along the island’s western shores overlooking Platypus Bay. With a beginner-friendly unsealed road leading right up to it, the site is incredibly easy to access, making it a top choice for first-time visitors and less experienced 4WDers. 

Boasting incredible views, peaceful surroundings, and the most spectacular sunrises and sunsets, this spot is by far one of the best places to camp on K’gari. We’d recommend whiling away the hours here by enjoying a refreshing swim in the creek, kayaking across Platypus Bay, fishing on the beach, or basking in the sun’s warm glow as you stroll along the sand.

Eli Camping Area

Tucked away behind the foredunes of K’gari’s Eastern Beach, Eli Camping Area is one of the best campsites on K’gari in terms of location. This site offers easy access to a range of K’gari’s top attractions, making it the ideal base camp for young families, keen off-roaders, and avid hikers. 

Venture out to the Maheno Shipwreck, complete some of K’gari’s scenic drives, or swim in the clear waters of Eli Creek. With countless nearby sightseeing opportunities, epic off-road trails, picturesque walking tracks, and much more, this campsite has something for every kind of adventurer. 

Awinya Creek Camping Area

A remote retreat on the west side of K’gari, Awinya Creek Camping Area is the perfect place to escape the crowds and be at one with nature. The site is nestled amongst the island’s low foredunes and boasts sweeping views from the top of Rooney Point to the sand cliffs of Platypus Bay. 

Campers here can spend their time chilling out on the beach, kayaking or boating along the bay, or swimming in the freshwater creek looking out over the ocean. With its peaceful surroundings, awe-inspiring views, and wonderfully diverse flora and fauna, this campsite is one of K’gari’s best-kept secrets… and that’s precisely what makes it so special.
